the sump oil level is rising dramatically, is it possible for the hyd oil to leak into sump from hyd pump shafts seal on lister ts3 engine.

Graham, if oil rises in a diesel engine it can only be either hydraulic oil, diesel fuel oil, or power steering oil, while in this instance as there is no power steering pump then it can only be diesel or hydraulic oil.
With external fuel return it is unlikely to be diesel oil, how easy is it to remove the hydraulic pump, drain the engine oil and put fresh oil in then run the engine and see what happens?
Hope that helps.

Hi,
This engine is fitted with a diaphragm type lift pump, :?: That could be passing fuel into the oil if the diaphragm has failed.

Is the oil as thin as water?

Sounds like a diaphram has a split in it to me. What are your oil levels like? Has the hydraulic levels dropped? If not pull the fuel pump and put a kit in it and as suggested drop the sump oil and replace as it is now thinned with diesel.
