That is indeed what DVLA thinks. The current V5 and age related reg was issued on the strength of a Historic Tractor and Engine Club certificate that in the absence of a chassis plate used the engine number for dating. They had been informed by the then owner that it was a Winget and didn't question that bit. He'd been told that by the previous owner. That looked odd to me and I finally identified it as a Barford 100. I do know it's original reg number but without a chassis number or any other info I don't think it's wise to go bothering DVLA to change it.

Sadly I don't think that the DVLA have the correct information in a lot of instances which I have also experienced when looking through some of their records for old trucks which I had once worked on, even the taxation liability dates in at least one case was questionable which I find rather concerning.

They are all over the place with commercials, loads of Dodge Commando fire engines are registered as Dodge 50 Series .

Not DVLA'S fault it's the people who registered them and unlike private car owners no one's bothered much at the time.

I think sometimes council clerks/dealers staff /company staff registering vehicles with dvla just guessed or used the last description if they did not know correct make and model of vehicle.

I would imagine road registered plant is even worse !

At least you guys have somewhere to go and try to trace correct plates etc. Out here in Oz once it is unregistered it is off the records never to be seen again.

Yes records are there from the time they put vehicle registrations on the central DVLA computer in the early/mid 70s.
Problem is when records were put on computer they only put vehicles which were on the road onto it.

So if you dig out an old wreck from a hedge with a number plate it's just luck whether the original local registration authority kept it's records, most threw them away .

Going back to Andy's dumper , it is in great condition with them nice curved wings and toolbox unblemished by the look .
It seems odd to me that AB put such fancy bodywork on the rear of a likely much abused vehicle .
