Indeed, especially that bloke Alec Issigonis who did the original Mini...I've cursed him no end of times for his engine packaging when trying to change say a clutch for example

Mind you as an incorporated mechanical/manufacturing engineer myself I should know better! But in my defence, I've been working in NDT for the last 21 years specialising in 3D X-ray Computed Tomography...spanner wielding is a hobby that I only had to make my living for a couple of years for a while between career jobs ;)

Getting sidetracked Issigonis was a flawed genius. Father in law worked for Ford. Ford design teams had the Mini in to dismantle and rebuild. They [Ford] could not make the sums add up as the Mini was so difficult /tight to assemble. Then of course the ugly Land crab and bits of that ugliness carried to other models.

Ahhh, the landcrab...both my grandfathers owned the Wolseley version with the 6 pot lump at the same time, one maroon and a manual, the other metallic turquoise and an automatic. The maroon one was sold and replaced with a white Allegro Vandenplas 1750, followed by a white MG Metro, the turquoise one was replaced by a white Princess Vandenplas!

Meanwhile, my arrival led my dad to selling his Q-Car 100e (it was essentially a Lotus Cortina in a jelly mould Anglia 2 door shell) and my mum her Herald 12/50 and them both being replaced by a Sunglow Yellow Maxi 1750. That was followed by a Gold Marina 1750 HLX estate, then a White Ital 1750 SLX Estate, a beige Montego 2.0HL Estate and finally a blue Montego 2.0HL before the BL bubble finally burst and two Merc (Moose type) A Classes and now a Panda...

They were all gluttons for punishment!!!

Hi all. Just some advice needed ... my dumper is going well, i don't use it much but it's going 100% when i do ... i have noticed that with regular use it starts up reasonably easy provided you let the injector spray about 4 or 5 times before you drop the decompression lever but if its left for long periods of time without use its very hard to start, the only way it will is by putting a small drop of oil into the inlet manifold which gives higher compression then itl fire up and seems to be ok again starting after that.... the injector has been reconditioned and everything serviced.. compression feels good, valve clearances adjusted, etc.... are Petter PH 1 and 2s usually difficult to start in the Winter and if they are left up ? Any help appreciated... thanks Guys....

The problem does sound like a compression issue. Could the rings be sticking and/or just wear?

Ours has always been more difficult to start in winter, in part because of the cold and no glow to get that diesel to go bang quite so readily. Besides using the starting governor override on the pump we used to just get one of us to spin it over for a while till it started to puff a bit of smoke out of the exhaust and we got tired, then we let the master loose on it (my dad) who would invariably have it running in 4 spins, instead of his usual summer 3...

Using the 'cold start' button when there is one is always the best thing to do in cold climate. Here I need no more than 2 swings in summer and similar in winter but we rarely get below zero but I do use the cold start position on my Lister engine.

There is no doubt some wear in the engine, id say lack of servicing judging by the oil filter that came out of it when i did service it... i always move the pump rack to the max when cranking... The company i work for ran many of these dumpers including 4WD ones also in the 1980s all using PH1 and PH2 engines including some Listers also... My boss told me that in the winter months they would sometimes turn the engine over about 20 times before dropping the decompression lever to start... he reckoned it would get lots of oil up on the pistons to help with compression and also plenty of diesel would be injected too....
