Thwaites brakes again

Post #1 by No Rush » Mon Feb 11, 2019 10:13 pm

Hello newby here i have what i believe is an orline with leaky axle seals my first question is how does the axle vent its pressure i cant see any vents
And one side looks like ive over greased it rather than oil is this possible?
Am i right in thinking the seal behind 6 bolt plate keeps oil in for diff and grease nip on outside does bearings
Many thanks for allowing me in
Cheers Andy
Ps other side is deffo oil on brakes so need to strip out any tips would be more than appreciated

Hi Andy and welcome.
Not sure where the diff vents from and now you have mentioned it I must have a look on our Benford Roughrider. As for axle seals, yes the seal behind the plate is to stop oil leaking out and then onto your brakes. A local bearing supply shop will carry seals and bearings if required but you will have to take them with you so he can identify the numbers properly. If the axle has any marks where the seal sits you can repair this using speedi-sleeves again from the bearing bloke.
Not sure what you mean about the grease nipple. Some tractorshave this set up and generally only needs a couple of pumps of the grease gun maybe 4 times a year as normally the bearing get lubricated by the diff oil but on some diffs they do require the grease as oil doesn't reach this area. It will require some investigation as to what happens here.

Do you have a model number and specs from your dumpy? This will help others help you more.

Yep them youngens know everything.
you must compress the image in order to post on most Forums. From my failing memory there is a section on the main home page that tells you how to post images. Any issues let us know and we can go through it step by step.

Andy to post a photo look at the small tabs along the top of the part where you type in your post; you will see a tab labelled "upload Pic" click on that, then this will open a small box that permits you to upload photos, simply click on the 'Browse' tab for each photo you want to post then finally click on the small blue writing underneath the Browse section that says upload all photos, finally click submit. Hope that helps.

Even drill and tap the hole at the top of the axle tube where they normally are placed then if no breather available do what thye did on the early Landrovers, run a copper tube up the back of the cab witth a pigs tail at the end. This allowed them to run through deep water.
