Hi Everyone
I have a Benford TT50 dumper with a Petter PH2 engine. It will start and run fine for most of the time but will sometimes start emitting black smoke and then cut out. It is then harder to start and I usually need to bump it.I have changed the fuel filter and fitted reconditioned injectors. Any ideas or suggestions as to why it cuts out would be most welcome.
Thanks Mark.

Does it still cut out after you have 'bump started' it ?
If so it sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Best thing to try is to establish a good fuel supply right from the start. Tank to fuel filter then to injector pump. On an old Lister I wanted to confirm the fuel delivery and after I followed the fuel delivery I left the injector out of the engine and hand cranked the engine over and confirmed the fuel spray. As I followed the flow and once it was at the fuel pump I was disappointed by the tiny dribble leaving the pump but I tried it anyway and once the fuel got to the injector there was a lovely super fine spray. It is a big surprise how a tiny dribble becomes such a high pressure to open the injector and spray. Remember to keep the fuel system spotlessly clean.
So follow the flow and see how it goes. Good luck and keep us informed.

Hi cobbadog
Thank you for your advice, once bump started it will run fine for 1hr or so before cutting out again. I have taken out the injectors and connected the fuel supply lines to them and they both have a good spray pattern. The fuel tank is welded in so would be difficult to clean out. Will remove the filter and check from there as you suggest. It’s a bit anoying as 90% of the time it runs very well.

Hi mechman
Thanks for your reply.
By this do you mean the vent in the tank cap ? I hadn’t thought of that , what is the best way to check it ?
