thwaites 4 tonne dumper brakes

Post #1 by smarttee » Wed Apr 11, 2018 11:05 am

good day everyone i am new here and require some help if possible thank you.
having just restored an 801.4 jcb 1995, i have now purchased a thwaites dumper truck 4 tonne swivel bucket 4wd. great machine only that the brakes seem seized on and get hot!! i believe they are immersed in hydraulic fluid within the axle, is there any quick fix or is it as bad as it sounds?
all this so i can build my own house :(
thank you for you help.

Have you got the axle with cable operated hand brake levers on the back side? Part of that mechanism might be seized. Sometimes a poor cable can be the culprit.

If they are cable brakes I can help. I just put mine back together today. Brake expanders can be freed up and re used although new one are available. You will need to remove drums and all the cables. Cut the split pins off and re drill the holes as they likely will not come out.
Relined brake shoes are available.
What a difference when it is all working as it should.

I think the op has later type brakes (oil immersed discs).

thank you guys for your replies, essexpete is correct they oil immersed discs so I am going to change the oil and hope that solves the problem, the footbrake has a slave cylinder in front of it and the pipes go down to the axle.the handbrake is cable.

i changed the oil, they are a little better but still overheating, can i flush them out with diesel oil, thinking it should remove the dirt and cheaper than hydraulic oil,

thank you

So have you checked that the hand brake linkage is not binding slightly. All 3 Thwaites dumpers that I have run tended to run a bit hot on the front brakes, particularly worse if stood with handbrake on. Have you used straight hydraulic oil in the axle? Ideally it should be a gear oil designed for wet brakes. Hydraulic oil the wrong type of grade and you can get squawk or brake chatter when the oil is not compatible with wet brakes.
