40M2S and 40M2T interchangeable?

Post #1 by GlenM » Sat Mar 10, 2018 2:03 am

As per the subject, my dumper has a 40M2S gearbox that needs an overhaul (again). Would a 40M2T gearbox fit? It's a Thwaties Alldrive 6000 with a PH2 engine.

Thanks.

Glen.

Glen

I've just overhauled a 40m newage gearbox and when my son ordered the parts he was told there was very little difference between the variants, I think the "T" denotes a transfer box for 4 wheel drive applications, the castings are the same

Ian,

Thanks for your reply. It does sound probable that there are few differences. My dumper is 4wd and it has the S box with a separate transfer box.

I did e-mail PRM yesterday to ask, so will see if they reply.

Glen.

Glen

Hopefully PRM will be able to help but they told me that the 40M box had not been made for years, I found plant & engineering services of Exeter very good and they know they're stuff about dumpers and gearboxes.
Have you got a pic of the box in question?

Cheers
Ian

PRM were extremely helpful, they said that the only differences between the two could be bellhousing, output flange and gear-lever. They offered to check which of the three it might be, by full serial numbers but the guy selling T 'box on e-bay pulled it, despite me having a bid already on it!
We have already re-built this one a couple of times because it keeps destroying the needle roller bearings on the front of the layshaft. Not sure why. I do now have a solid brass bush from another spares 'box, which fits in place of the bearings, so that might be worth a try.
I use the dumper for work, so I need to get a spare 'box to fit, then the original can be repaired and kept in reserve.
I don't think I have a photo of the 'box.

Hi Glen

That's what I replaced the needle bearing with a brass one, after rebuilding the casing, had to make sure there was an oil journal around the bearing for lubrication

Ian,

That's interesting. Where did you get the brass one from? I guess there is an oil feed for the needle bearing anyway. The old brass one has an oil hole through it to an oil groove.

The T 'box is back on e-bay again, so I have agreed a price and will hopefully be picking it up tomorrow/Tuesday.

Hello
If its the needle bearing I think youre on about (part number 0561404) it changes to a brass bush now part number 0561404B. We fit these to the 40M2B124 gearbox fitted to old Benford 2 Ton Dumpers. I've attached a gearbox breakdown of the Benfords Gearbox so you can check where it goes. They can be obtained from a company called Plant and Engineering in Exeter phone number 01392 882220. I'm sure there give you dimensions etc to make sure its the correct part your after.
