Benford starter

Post #1 by Dan6 » Thu Mar 02, 2017 4:34 pm

Hi
I have a 99 benford 6t with a perkins engine. It struggles to turn over on the starter motor.

Alt, battery (new) and leads seem good.
In order to get it started i have to connect jump leads to the starter motor.
Once it does get a fast turn or two it fires up straight away.
Before i go changing the starter are there any known issues with other components loading up the cranking engine.. hydraulics .torque etc?
Has anyone fitted a gear reduction starter to theirs?.

Thanks

Dan I'm just taking a guess here but I would look at the starter first; also check the voltage drop when you crank the engine over.

I would start were Jeremy suggests, check all the lugs are crimped on to the cables properly and the motor is grounded properly to the battery and frame
A simple multimeter will help to find voltage drop, should be able to pick something up from a discount auto parts store for a few bucks

Thanks guys
Volt drop fluctuates 0.2 to 0.7. I will repeat when i can get a more solid connection of the meter leads.. having said that the same effect is seen on both positive and negative battery leads.

Engine is AR with a lucas 1291 pump

When check voltage drop you need to go from starter side of the solenoid and the the block
You need to check the voltage drop at the starter motor to check your total voltage drop
If the voltage drop is within 5% I would think that would be ok and then check the bronze bushes the armature spins on

If it turns over with jump leads connected to the starter i would suspect a poor earth return path,

hi dan
if your dumper stills has a battery isolater fitted,disconect one lead and join it to the other side of the isolater {so the isolater is bypassed}
does your dumper not start only when its cold? or does it do it all the time regardless of engine temp?

Volt drop check above was leads only. I have done the isolator bypass also.
Did a volt drop check to starter terminal main input to motor positive stud(after solenoid contacts) and negative at end of starter (battery negative connects here via isolator)
Volts are dropping and recovering as it rotates.. goes as low as 6volts.. cranking is very slow.
With jump leads attached its still slow but enough to start. Hot or cold doesnt make much difference.
Going to open up the starter next..

Did a volt drop test starter off ..just under 10v.
Replaced starter today with a new 4.0kw unit.
now starting spot on..takes about 2seconds.
Thank you everyone for your help.
