When I started work in 77 with Wimpey's a Johnson 2H sat outside my cabin window. It looked very antiquated and basic even then
I assume they had good traction when empty with the engine weight over driving wheels.
Were / are they heavy to steer with 1 ton over the steering wheels ??

No, the steering works great.
