Just bought a small dumper, to move quite a few loads of soil and bricks around the garden.

I think its a Thwaites Nimbus, but can anyone confirm this.

Engine is a Petter PH1, which has an oil leak from one of the valve guide tubes, so I will be doing a top end strip down at some time.

First issue I want to sort out is the brakes, handbrake and clutch. From reading the forum I understand the clutch, which is a chain driven drum, has Triumph Herald drum shoes fitted. Is this correct ? The front drum brakes, I want to look at as well. What shoes are needed for replacement ? Are they the same Herald shoes, and how do I release the drum shoes, to get the drums off.. ?

Handbrake doesnt work properly. The ratchet is stuck in, so I gave the handle a good shot of WD40 tonight, and a few taps. The button had popped out but I think its rusted internally and is shot. Are replacements available ?

Can anyone tell me what the imperial size wing nut on the air filter is, as its missing. Its about 6mm.

I've got a load of 6mm wing nuts, but don't really want to rethread the bar that holds the filter cap on.

I take it all the threads, nuts etc on a machine of this age are going to be imperial ?

Had a few hours on "Daisy Dumper" as my daughter has named her. Decided to remove the front nearside wheel, and have a look at the brakes, to see what sort of state they were in. Undid the brake adjuster, and slipped off the drum, to find the shoes had worn down to the copper rivets, and the whole assembly caked in an oily gunk. I can only assume the oil has leaked from the the seal at the end of the shaft. So, I removed and cleaned all of the brake parts. Just for good measure, and because I wanted to start a little restoration, I sanded down the drum with a flap wheel, on my 4 inch grinder, primed it, then baked it off in the oven.. Just put a coat of JCB yellow gloss on it now, and it looks much better than it came off. Once cleaning it all, I reassembled it, as I have no shoes for replacement, and I will just forget where everything goes..

Are these shoes from a Triumph Herald as well as the clutch drum ?

No part nos on the shoes? If all else fails there is a place in Bordon (name escapes me!) that will just reline whatever you bring in.

I learnt to drive on one of those, happy days. Whilst servicing check the gearbox and steering box for lack of oil or water contamination.

Thanks Pete. Has anyone got any info on the manufacturer of the front axle ? I need to have a look at replacing the bearings and seals. Also, there is a bad oil leak off what I think is the reduction box, that drives a cog, that then drives the chain to the clutch... Its oozing out, and looks a bit watery.

The guy I bought it from said it needed a bit of TLC..!! But the more I delve, the more I find. Just cant help myself fixing it...

Also had a look at the handbrake lever. Disassembled it to find the internal spring was in pieces. Ive got a box full of springs so fitted a new one... Perfect.

Gave it a strip down and a coat of primer. Will give it a top coat tomorrow..
