Post #1 by Dean1234 » Sun Jan 22, 2023 6:18 pm

Can anyone point me in the right direction of how to start my thwaites dumper with a st2 engine as I have seemingly tried everything to get it to start with no luck, it cranks with the handle but I'm not getting it to fire up so I must ge doing something wrong. Any help will be much appreciated

When you are cranking with compression do you get any white/grey smoke out of the exhaust?

Does it feel like it has compression? It may be the cold weather stopping it from firing up and not quick enough on the crank. As Pete has asked, has there been any smoke out the exhaust, if so what colour.

When cranking I get a puff a white smoke, but I'm not sure I'm doing it right as I'm just turning like a mad man. After looking on YouTube I can see idiots like me just going round and round and then I see people with just 1 or 2 turns flicking the decompressors at the right moment.

Ok, I am one of those annoying mongrels that gets away with a swing or two and drop the decompression lever and away it goes, sorry.
So what is the ambient temp when you are trying a start up, and are you using the cold start setting?

If the ambient temp is bloody cold then get someone to help you. While you work at the cranking get the missus to push the decompression lever for you. It just might be your technique but it can easily be a slight issue.

To select the cold start have a look at the pump where the linkage connects. It maybe a rectangular shape and the base plate should have a few raised sections on it. On one end of that plate there should be 2 raised sections close together. Grab the rectangular piece, lift it out away from the pump and turn it towards the next raised section. This is the cold start position. Then try another crank up.

Have a look online for a manual, there are some free versions around and it will show you what I mean. If I remember I will take a pic of mine tomorrow and post it up. Good luck
