My mate asks: 'Any signs of a part or serial number on either the axle or drums?'

I guess from those he can go look at his many lists to cross reference them against vehicles they would have been used on

Certainly worth looking at the dimension to see, but I suspect they will be different, as the brakes I would expect are rod driven if it's configured like our Thwaites.

The S1 drums are the same on the 88" 2 and 2a at 10 inch inner diameter using I think 2 inch wide linings

I've posed the question to my Morris guru, who also knows a thing or two about Land Rovers as he's owned a few and runs one currently...it's his fault that I have three of them myself!

They are 10" drums, but the Landy drums have quite a pronounced taper towards the outer face. On the dumper drums, there's a much shallower taper if that makes sense!

I've not found any markings on the axle or drums yet but I'll have a good look when I get a minute!

I think the axle on these is a Salisbury 5HA

Yeah - understand. The 109 has a square corner, but is wider (or is that just the 6cyl?)

Anyway, it's just an option if the originals don't survive.

Call me a heathen, but I wouldn't need to be very stuck before I'd be looking at defender discs and mechanical calipers.

I was starting to wonder if a hydraulic disk set up would make more sense if I can't get the rod brakes sorted. We'll see!

109's had 11 inch drums, then things get really odd with the 1 tonne, 6 cylinder and Stage 1 each having variations within variations; Stage 1 rear Salisbury being completely different to the 1 tonne Salisbury...

Yup, if you had a spare Landy 10" drum to hand it would be worth offering one up to see if it could be used...but of course then you might find that the wheel would bolt up flush with the mounting face...

Thanks - it's starting to get a bit rusty.
IIRC the S1 had two shoe widths - they got wider in '58 I think.

Not sure what is available in GB, but mech calipers are sold in Oz for trailers and work really well.

Now that I am doing the same job on my Liner I am having the same issue removing the hub. Hub nut is off but cannot remove the hub so far.

I was wondering what the outcome was on this job.
Cheers Cobba

Evening folks, sorry for the lack of updates... Winter and coming up against a bit of a dead end with the brakes led to me loosing a bit of direction with the project to be honest.
I've been keeping an eye on Facebook marketplace and eBay in case any decent front axles with brakes came up for sale. I saw one, which I think is still there, but it only has one brake drum.
Then out of the blue, another 2S appeared on Facebook that was only 30 miles away. A quick exchange of texts saw me heading across with my trailer in anticipation of it being half decent. Luckily, she was in reasonable shape, started and ran ok, and best of all, had fully functioning brakes!! I was shocked and amazed, agreed a price and got her loaded.
