Drive Shaft

Can anyone advise me on this drive shaft, is there a certain amount of expansion on them, and what is the threaded end cap for?

The threaded cap acts as a seal for when it is greased. Some had a leather or felt ring inside. The idea is used on so many things now from Dumpers, 4wd, trucks and anything that has a long suspension travel. Yes if you take the tail shaft off you should be able to slip the 2 pieces apart as there is a spline in side and that is wht needs to be greased. Very simple once you have had a look inside.

I had an inkling that is supposed to extend and retract, i have removed the screw cap and dismounted the shaft from gearbox side, it appears to be stuck solid.
I was hoping not to have to remove full shaft.
Any tips , apart from hitting it with hammer?

The shaft should come apart you may need to give it tap with a hammer; I would use a copper hide hammer so as not to damage the shaft, I would also mark the shaft either with a centre punch or paint so that it goes back together the same way or else you could have vibration issues, does it accept grease okay?

Yes start by putting a pair of centre punch marks before separating the 2 shafts. As suggested trying pump grease in first then also some Lanox/Innox/WD40 or similar penetrating oils then flog it with a soft hammer, it will let go. As a last option heat it up. It is very important that the shaft is able to extend and retract.
