I've been taking a look at these for a while now as well as the cranes they are based on.

On thing that had become clear to me is that the photograph of one which is used, for example, in the book 'Excavators' by Peter Grimshaw has been printed the wrong way around at some point in its history - e.g. it is a mirror image of how it should be.

The bucket on the machine should be towards the left of the photo and not the right - then it makes sense against the surviving drawings.

One reason for researching this is to do a model of one in Meccano - see http://www.nzmeccano.com/image-56190 for it under development. Actually there are a couple of errors in that version which I'm now fixing.
