Demag: the first all hydraulic excavator

Post #1 by SRB » Sat Mar 05, 2011 11:34 am

Well i have just been privelaged to spend a week in the Old Demag factory, so thought i'd share a pics of the first all hydraulic excavator.

Its sat on display and is in working order, new set of batteries and away she goes.....

Made in 1954 and weighing in a little over 12 tonnes, this B504 is powered by a 3 cyl Deutz engine churning out 54 HP.
Interesting to note the lack of hydraulic lines, the oil is fed into the cylinders through the pins, you can see the couplings if you take a wee zoom in.....

Glad to see it preserved so well, i wonder if there are any still in service?

Interesting, that was an expensive way of moving the oil!
