Hi,
Just some excavayors at Vaynor Quarries in the early 60's.
OK, so its a 19 on the drop ball and the dumper's a Foden, but what breed is the face shovel?:?: It's not a Ruston because its got chain operated crowd.

Hi Jeremy and Martyn and thanks.
I spoke to a man who knew the machine. He says it was a P&H.

Oh well I said it was purely a guess so it was a P&H nice pic anyway.

Re: Excavators at the face 1960's
hello fowlerman.
i am sticking my neck out here,my initial observations tell me that the face shovel is in fact either a 33 rb or a 43 rb.my reasons for saying this i have studied the track pad design and it is identical to a ruston, also the design of the saddle block looks a close second to the saddle blocks we used to have on an old 54 rb face shovel.the 19 rb on the drop ball was driven by a man called harold read from cefn coed, i used to fill in on it and the 30 rb face shovels if they were a driver down.that was in 1971 and the manager was a man by the name of jack cotter,i wait to be corrected on my observations.
regards gah 1950.

hello fowlerman.
sorry to butt in again , but your comments on the face shovel not being a ruston is incorrect.ruston bucyrus had a wide range of face shovels that were fitted with twin racking arms operated by a continuous racking chain which of course there was no crowd rope or backhaul rope,on closer examination the above shovel appears to be electrically powered i think i can see the the cable entering the machine beetween the track.
