Daewoo/Doosan Excavators

Post #1 by Nick Drew » Sat Aug 04, 2007 7:37 pm

On the site where I am currently working another contrator P.J. Kingwell recently took delivery of a Doosan DX180 excavator which I have to say looks very nice, sadly I have been able to get much feedback on the machines performance as the driver seems to be a bit quiet and reserved  (Dosent have much to say)?

Before he had this machine he was operating a Daewoo 140 Solar which I understand they were very pleased with.

I am not a big fan of Daewoo equipment mainly due to the fact that I was operating a real bad 130-V around 2001 and that kind of put me off, it was almost impossible to grade with and I found that the controls had very little feel to them.
That particular machine had seen off quite a few drivers who just couldnt get on with it.

I also drove one of the early DH130s around 1988 which was not very well balanced, around that time I also heard reports of many Daewoo mechanical failures and machines catching fire.

I would be interested to hear of other members views of Daewoo equipment?

I came across this old Daewoo DH220 last year in a plant sales yard in Somerset England,
Note the extensive welding to the boom :o

Oh Yes!! Without doubt you need to go a long way to beat the Japanese machines but in fairness to the Koreans they are catching up fast!! :geek:

I would expect that. Ive been scrapping out an old Koehring which used to be pretty popular in the USA.
the design just sucks compared to anything we see today small wonder they are not in business.

When they went to hydraulic machines they simply converted their mechanical ones instead of redesigning them
so for goodness sake the drive motor is still in the upper unit and they are block and skid drive--- to steer you disengage one track and set the brake (or if the brake doesnt work--your oiler blocks the track) and you turn.

those are very large ones. --- Koehring numbers always ended in 66 It is a 466 that I am scrapping. the model numbers you mention are in the range of 100 ton machines. the one I am cutting up was likely a 30 ton machine.

Here are some shots I took today of the Doosan DX180 at work.

I have been told that the DX range of machines have been well received in the industry :dizzy:
