On today's agenda; first run up the 580BT and the Poclain, then next job grass/weed cutting duty around the 690, once that was done I had only a couple of jobs I wanted to get done today.
The first of these was to remove the damaged side panel that covers the derv tank, then clean up the top of the tank to enable me to remove the tanks cover plate and clean out the inside properly, I may as well while I am this far.
Removing the four securing bolts for the damaged panel was awkward to say the least but I got there in the end, however the mess on the top of the tank along with the rust and other debris meant that the rest of the time was spent cleaning the top off, I did leave the cover nuts soaking in freeing oil ready for my next visit.

Pete, it's not a spring it's a cooling hose and the unit is the oil engine cooler.

Everything is covered in muck rust and crap so its hardly surprising that people cannot recognize what components are! This is what happens when people leave covers off old machines because they are too lazy to put them back on afterwards, let's face it you'd be hard pressed to find an older digger like a Hymac in the UK with all of its covers in place, even my 580BT had one cover missing.
To be fair the covers were never the best of quality in the first instance, but if you value any old machine you own, then make sure it gets covered up! I lost count of how many dustpan fulls of crap I removed from that small part of this machine, it made quite a nice spoil pile by the time I had finished, this is just one part of that machine. The muck holds the damp then you get serious rust problems which has happened in this instance, long term that could lead to further issues and I expect more issues next week when I attempt to remove the cover from off the top of the diesel tank.

Today's mission had already been stated, and now it has been carried out successfully Fortunately the fuel tank cover nuts came off okay, I had been expecting a battle with them. Soon whipped the lid off and peered down inside; glad I carried out this operation now, it was time well spent although it took me longer to actually get the tank cleaned out than removing and refitting the cover.
There was rust, mud, general dirt in there and a fag end too, wonder how that got in there because there is a gauze filter in the filler neck? I cleaned out the residual fuel which also acted as a solvent to help me clean the tank out, I did put a small amount of clean fuel back in after the cleaning process was done, job done. There is not a planned visit next Thursday as I have to attend a funeral of a former work colleague, but next week I want to try and find a turbo to fit on the lump, that should prove a challenge.
