Re: New owner of Hymac 580 B
First i had to get the shims in place again
Then in with thick loctite before I put it together
Shims in place. It got really tight!
Finally i welded a washer over it to secure it even more
The last days we got very much of snow so i had to clear that before i could continue today
Than i only had the fitting of the new bearings left. With wind and -11 outside it wasnt cozy all the time, but i got warm inside when i saw the result
Bearings fitted
This video shows the results. All the clearance removed! ( I really tried to embed the video using the function on this page, but i didnt get it to work )

Very interesting; nice repair let us know how you get on with it in service. Looks cold made me shiver just seeing the snow but I suppose that you would get used to it over there whereas a small amount causes chaos over here.
The rest of your 580B looks to be in great condition for it's age; it is always great to see an old classic in wonderful condition.

Yes we have to get used to the snow over here
The machine seems to be in good shape. The owner before me did quite a lot of restoration work on it.
But i have not yet done any digging with it so the condition of the hydraulics is yet to be tested

Now I'm done with the restoration of the drive also on the other side. The chain sprocket was a little bit tricky to get in place. The splines was a little bit damaged at the edge so i had to grind the edge a little.
Then the new chain. The old one had stretched half a link over the years so it was much needed get a new one there i think.
The result: https://youtu.be/uBKQDPZFSII
Finally the other track had to be mounted again. With all the snow and ice making everything very slippery it was not an easy task. Took several hours before me and my father had it in place.

Must say I could not imagine trying to do a job like that in snow like that great effort there by you and your father Andy.

Re: New owner of Hymac 580B
I want to modernize the worn controls to modern standard to make the machine easier to operate.
The first step will be to replace the strong springs in the valveblock to easier ones. But first i have to make a special tool to remove the screw holding the spring.
My machine is equipped with an extra boost function on the dipper arm, se arrows in picture. If i got it right this is the valve to use if i will give my excavator a tilt bucket later, in Sweden we call it a planeringsskopa. Sorry dont know the English word
I also have a question for Jeremy. Is this the original triple pump or has it been change once in a time?

Re: New owner of Hymac 580B
Hi Andy the pump looks original to me it is the same as the one fitted to my digger, the Commercial pumps were fitted to the early machines but the likes of the 580C was fitted with Hamworthy pumps instead. I would advise getting the pumps checked out as the ones on my 580BT were shot big time, then again perhaps my digger had a harder life?
As a general rule use the machine until it get warm if the hydraulics become weaker then that is an indication that the pumps require looking at; should that be the case I am advised that parts are available and Tony Flint did a first class job of repairing the pumps on my machine.
Good luck with your pilot control venture the bushes in the control levers do get worn and at some point in the future I will take the ones off my machine and replace the worn bushes and pins, however I want to keep my machine as standard as possible so I won't be attempting a control lever replacement.

Re: New owner of Hymac 580B
Thanks for the advice and the information! As soon as i be able to test my machine in real digging i will have your advice regarding the pumps in mind.
I understand that your intention is to restore the machine to original standards and i can certainly understand that. I also admire the art of engineering on this English classic I will save the controls for the future.
I think i have to buy your book to learn more about this machines

Re: New owner of Hymac 580B
Time for an update. Replacing the springs in the valves was a pretty tight job to do. Not much of a space to work on.
Connecting the wires to the valves
Brackets for the joysticks
Everything worked the way it should except the swing function, it was running in the wrong direction. When i was pulling the stick left, the machine turned right and so on.
I had to make a linkage to invert to movement of the wire.

The machine now swings in the right direction and with the new controls it feels much more modern when operating.
