Hi Andy, I am sorry to say they are hard to get hold of and unless you happen to come across a machine being broken the only way forward is to have one made new, they are the same as the 580BT, and early 580C model but not the later 580C. Hope you get one, let us know how you get on.

Are you sure they are the same as 580bt?
I know that the gearbox is different.
But if the shaft is the same that is good news. Makes it easier to find one

I have just found out that the drive shaft for the 580B is not the same as the 580BT however the good news is that I have managed to locate a brand new shaft for you, I will pm you the details.

A brand new shaft arrived to me two weeks ago.
This week i mounted it all together again.
When i compered the new and the old shaft i could see that the old was pretty worn down in the splines, making the drivewhel to wiggle.
The new shaft made it nice and tight. Now she tracks again!

Helo Hymac friends. The starter on my Hymac seems to be worn out. It only crank the engine to start every ten time or so. Most times it only cranks half a rotation or so despite new battery. Anyone know the serial number to a new one? Is there other models than the CAV starter that fits?
Im just in the middle of a digging job and it is frustrating when the starter fails.

Hi Andy here is a photo of the starter from my 580BT I would have thought that there must be more than one type of starter to fit these old Ford engines; sadly I have no part or identification number.

Thanks Jeremy. Good to know that other models fit to :)

I took the starter from the machine yesterday and opened the rear cover so the carbons were visible. There were four coals in total. I picked them out one by one and cleaned. Found that one carbon almust was stuck in its race, so I had to sand it down a bit with sandpaper and clean in the race.
Assembled and put it back in the machine which started right up. So maybe the caking coal was the culprit. Even today it started at once and there is a nice spin on the starter motor again.
