Cat 330D with Leonard 8000 boom

Post #1 by SRB » Mon Jul 07, 2008 1:43 pm

Bit of an unusual one this, a new Cat 330D fitted with a Leonard 8000 K series boom, one of two going to Multiserv.

Used for de-bricking kilns and the like, looks a usefull bit of kit if you have an itchy ar$e!

As it's going to Multiserv, is it going to what is/was Short Bros. (Plant) Ltd? Who were bought by Multiserv when they bought the industrial support services business of Brambles a few years back.
I've seen quite a few photos of Short Bros. operating Gradall excavators on crawler undercarriages with rippers, probaly for kiln stripping also, but I expect they've gone for the modified Cat as its probably easier to get spares and service in the UK than for Gradall products.

Incidently in the UK Harsco the parent of Multiserv own SGB.

De-bricking what? :dizzy: :dizzy: :dizzy:
My guess would be that it is about cleaning "inside the ceiling" from rocks when making tunnels?

At least I understood the rest of that sentence.

IBH, Gradall was the first that came to my mind as well.

My knowledge of this is only rudimentry but SRB is described a process whereby Refractory linings -heat resistent lining materials manufactued from a range of Indutrial Minerals are removed from the inside of Furnaces and Kilns at industrial plants e.g. steel works and cement works.
There is a picture of a similar Liebherr based unit at work on Multiserv's website:

Ok, I see! Thanks!

For our Swedish readers:
IBH is (as I understood it) referring to "borttagning av slagg" or something similar.

Hello IBH, were Short bros plant the same firm that had depots in Scunthorpe and South Wales?
If so I can remember their depot in Hirwaun, they supplied 22RB's to the NCB in the South Wales coalfieds.

I don't know much about Short Bros. though they definitely had their main offices/workshops/yard in Newport.
