Rotary Coupling Oil Leak - JCB JS70

Post #1 by tomace27 » Sat Aug 09, 2014 9:23 pm

Hi All,
My machine is leaking hydraulic oil and it looks like it's where the rotary coupling attaches to the slew ring. Looking up from underneath i can see the oil drips down along the rotary coupling but I can't see exactly where it comes from.
It leaked about 1/2 litre over the last week while parked but it doesn't leak any more or less when the machine is turned on.

I don't have much experience with excavator repairs but am fairly handy around cars and tractors so I would like to fix it myself if possible.

Questions:
Is it likely it is some seal or seals on the rotary coupling that is causing the leak?
Do I need to drain the hydraulic oil before removing the rotary coupling?
Do I need to drain the slew ring oil?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also does anyone have manuals for the JCB JS70 or Sumitomo SH60
Thanks

Hi,
The rotary coupling may be leaking, but before you get too carried away you need to wash it off and see exactly where the oil is leaking from. It could easily be no more than a loose pipe or fitting.

Thanks Fred,
Ended up taking out the rotary coupling and replacing all the seals. A bit of work involved but sorted now and no more leaks.
Got a manual for the JS70 too, well worth the $29.....
