Great Shand Pictures Clockwork
I have posted some pictures of Dyggor Gaylord 195B machines in my 195B post - these could well be ex Shand Machines as DG took over Shand at some point. I can remember Shands plant yard at Rowsley - Derbyshire as a young lad - it's now a retail park. I can also remember Shand operating a Koehring 1066 or 1266 backhoe on the Icehouse OCCS at Ripley Derbyshire circa 1981/82 - do you have any pictures
All the best

Snap Ian - just what i thought when i saw the Shand photos.
BTW I'm sure Scottish utility contractor Morrison took over some of the former Shand operations as they (still) have an office just down the road from the yard still in what was Shands old (new) offices built in the 1980s. I think Morrison was then taken over by Anglian Water Group at one stage in the late 1990.

Re: Opencast Coal Pictures
Information regarding Shand before the Morrison era is fairly patchy but Charter Consolidated bought 'Alexander Shand (Holdings) Ltd from British Petroleum in 1981 for £25m primarlily for its coal mining activites and also owned 80% of Alexander Morrison (Builders) Ltd & 'Biggs Wall'.
In 1989 the Morrison family bought back their 80% stake in Morrison plus Shand and Biggs Wall.
For a short time Shand became 'Morrison Shand' then just Morrison Construction, Biggs Wall formed the basis of Morrison's utilities division.
Morrison floated on the stock market in 1995, were bought by the Anglian Water Group in 2000, who renamed themselves 'AWG' and rebranded most of Morrison's operation as AWG.
AWG sold Morrison Construction Services to GallifordTry in 2006

Re: Opencast Coal Pictures
IBH thanks for filling more of the details on companies past histories. All these Mergers and acquisitions would make a great book - As all the name changes and takeovers/sell off and rebrandings of well known names get forgotten. I wonder how many names survive from 100 years ago and from say 50 year from the top 100 builders / construction companies in today's list.
Great collection of old photos Craig
Ian you mentioning CP reminds me of another Coal industry related company from the 1980/90s mergers and takovers boom & bust - Anglo United and subsidiary Coallite who had taken over Hargreaves and also owned the Falklands island Company, & IIRC Anglo also owned Keyline builders mechants group who took over Monks in Sheffield.
Part of Anglo's former yard / offices at Sheepbridge Chesterfield are now occupied by a Utility company (?) contractor as the yard is full of large dia cast iron pipes, but back in the 1980s had a fleet of Caterpilar motor scrapers in for rebuilding & servicing in the workshops behind (the site is now split into several smaller units & offices).

Re: Opencast Coal Pictures
Great link to Shands yard Craig
Dave - Talking of takeovers etc. I drove past what was Shepherd Hills Yard in Chesterfield at the weekend. To the unaware you would never know it had been there.
The site of one of my ex employers Butterley Engineering in Ripley is now flattened and partly built on and another earthmoving contractor's site - Mcnulty Brothers of Denby Derbyshire is a housing estate. Mcnultys operated a fleet of D9's D8 & boxes and Cat 631 scrapers engaged on OCCS topsoil stripping and playing field construction etc.

Yes Shepherd Hills yard has been gone a few years now. It stood empty for a few year before they redeveloped it i think. ( but I bet the new Houses are out of warranty now as must have been up 10 year now)
Dont recall McNultys at all but been past Butterleys works a few time and saw there Falkirk Wheel again in September a Interesting bit of modern engineering that should stand as a moinument to them for a few years.
On OCCS related companies Is Pugh Lewis still about who did some OCCS work mainly landscaping and hauling Coal in 8 wheelers I think ? They were from some were down that south side of Chesterfield.

Re: Opencast Coal Pictures
Hi Dave,
Pugh Lewis are from Pilsley, I remember them working on drainage & fencing of the Icehouse OCCS Ripley Derbyshire around 1981/82 following completion of coaling by Shand. I believe I have some pictures of their plant and will scan them in. In the mean time see below for their website.
