I agree with Bigkit mate, it does get boring when your on the big stuff after a while. when i was 25 i drove a Cat 385B for a couple of days and thought it was great, but i would sooner be on a 16-25t class machine as there are more various job rolls to be had. That said i have a 10 hour shift tomorrow and a 12 hour shift on Sunday on one of our Volvo EC700c's loading A40F's, So get your favorite Cd's in the player and a mug of tea on the go and switch off . Here's a few pics.

Well Joe, the 12 hour shift was rather wet to say the least. We were removing overburden on Sunday and with the amount of rain we had come down (Like all day) it made our site like a bog, overburden on top of clay don't mix and i nearly lost the machine in a soft spot. I had to pull myself out and in the process scratched the counterweight slightly but it was better than sinking the whole machine. In total i loaded 176 loads of burden into 5 Volvo 40F's or just over 7000t so i didn't think we done to badly considering the conditions we had. If you come down to Devon bring a flask and some decent weather with you mate

Re: Hitachi Zaxis 870LCH-3
The guys are right about big gear getting tedious, same thing day in day out, load, load, load, maybe a bit of ripping and for the real unlucky ones more then enough rockbreaking. Ok the progress made in a day is rewarding but when your making it you don't notice it as much. To me there's no difference in operating a big girl to the medium sized girl, just ones a little slower but gets more done. A real challenge for any operator are the smaller ones, as you probably know yourself they're fast and giddy, if you can work a mini smoothly and without looking like its running on kangaroo diesal then your good enough for the big steady work in my eyes. Age has nothing really to do with it for most companies I'd imagine, its competency and productivity, if you can move x amount of material in a shift and do it safely then there's no reason you shouldn't be let near something like this 870. But if its big your looking for get to Oz Joe. I'm flying on the 7th of September to start a new job in an ore mine. A PC3000 Komatsu awaits, along with 4xPC1250's, its the land of big equipment and I'm only 26. Will start a thread or two as soon as I get settled in and back civilisation from my first two week term out the bush
