Swindon Works diesel test plant

Post #1 by martyn williams » Sat Sep 17, 2011 5:43 pm

A mate emailed me this photo of a Mayback MD655 on test at Swindon works.I had a day in there, very interesting being there when a V12 is being tested to its maximum power output. Also very noisey.
Alas all this is gone now like everything else.

Hi Martyn,
Did they have any silencing on the test beds in those days. :?:  The firm I work for specialises in noise control - mainly on jet engine test beds and gas turbine generator and compressor packages.

The diesel test plant was 100 yards from the canteen. When an engine was on test the building would rattle. As they had a V13 MD855 engine to test transmissions in the same building. Did not notice any soundproofing,if it had it did not work

Not really on topic , I am sorry , but for a while a worked for a company that tested engines . They had 16 test cells and these where booked months in advance , they tested any engine they got asked to , a few weeks before I left we had a big JCB one in , full load test for 168 hours . These where connected to a dyno , basically a huge water cooled brake. There was a number of Ford engines there that where under development , one being run with -30 glycol being pumped around to simulate artic conditions , true an amazing set up .

Trust me when I say once these engines come off test they are fit for little more than scrap , we had permant cooling feeds and fuel feeds , we held more fuel onsite than most road side garages LOL and not just UK spec fuel.
