Caterpillar loader and coal train

Found this bit of youtube footage of a Cat loader loading up a coal train. The train is formed of 32 tonne hopper wagons that were designed for powerstation coal use.The train can be unloaded without stopping.Trackside equipment hits a lever on the wagons to discharge its load.If this equipment is not working correctly it has been known to take the step off the locomotive.

Train being unloaded.Larger wagons are used now.It takes 1 1/2 hours to load 21 wagons with a couple of Caterpillar loading shovels and 20 mins to unload. Each train is around 2000 tonnes.

Film of the newer wagons at Ffross y Fran ( Cwmbargoed ) Wondered why it took so long to couple up to that train till I saw the driver. It was my mate Chris, very slow but carefull driver.I am spending a few hours a week at this location now on train inspections, repairs etc. Hit a sheep up there last week,it bounced off the van and just kept on going.
Its like heaven to me, earth moving machines, trains and sheep. What more can a valley boy ask for.

Tasty videos Martyn,

What supprised me was the sight of a US style coupler on the wagons and engine,is this a new thing? are all UK rolling stock and engines using them now?

Hello Graham
Frieight locos and wagons have been using them for around 15 years now. They are supposted to be stronger than the old 3 link and screw couplings.Railway passenger carriages have been using that set up for many years. It makes for a very ridgid train in the event of a derailment reducing damage and injury.
