Interesting news from Lodge House.....

Post #1 by Joes1989 » Sun Mar 27, 2011 6:06 pm

My friend L.Kezz and i have just been for a slightly pointless walk around the perimeter of UK Coals Lodge House site in Smalley,Derbyshire......

On our way back we came across this sign......after reading it i decided it might be of interest to a few lads on here so i took a couple of pics of it!

Apparently UK Coal have applied for planning permisson to extend the site by 78 hectares (what ever that is in english?) to extract another 748,000 tonnes of coal in an extention to the duration by another 2 years......was meant to be finishing in Oct 2012 but if they get the go ahead will finish in oct 2014.

Hi Joe,
Thats correct, I work on Heanor Gate Industrial Estate and the extension would take the site almost right up to the fringes of the Industrial Estate. There's a lot of local opposition to the scheme, particularly with the fact that LEM Resources have applied to take out 400,000 tonnes at George Farm, Denby Village with access of the bend near to the Nags Head (as was) Pub in Smalley. You've got to remember that although almost all of the Smalley and Denby area has been opencast in the past, there is still a lot of coal left at depths that were considered too deep to work in the past with the plant of that era.

Yeh me and Kezz were talking about how much coal was left in the hills around the mine! Would the extension cut through that country park (the name of which eludes me) at the bottom end of heanor gate mate?

What sort of kit would be down at that site in Denby village? Nothing too big im guessing.....maybe a 80 tonner or will it be 65-70 tonners?

Joe,
The Lodge House extension will just skirt Shipley park. See link to planning details
http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/environment/planning/planning_applications/current_applications/app-details.asp?AppCode=CM6/0910/94&AppType=2

According to the planning application the Denby Village site would be using excavators of the Cat 350 size with 773/75 size trucks. Will be interesting if it goes ahead, as part of it will be on some of the land farmed by a mate of mine, so will be able to hopefully view operations.

Paul,
LEM Resources are a little known Lancashire based company, they don't appear to have a website, their agent is Silkstone Enviromental.

All the Best

Ian

Nah i think it'll be the same kit to be honest! I have been wondering about trying to speak to the site manager at Lodge to see what the crack would be regarding me getting on the big stuff!

The extension has been knocked back for Lodge house.

Not looking good for uk coal as a new job in the north east has also been rejected.
