While searching google maps, i notoced an opencast coal site North west of Bridgend and adjacent a small town called Newcastle Higher! It looked like there was a fair bit of kit working there!
Does anyone have any information as to the operator of the site and its name?

Re: Opencast site near Bridgend
I've just had a Google
It seems Parc Slip was the site of a colliery that closed in the early 1900's with opencast extraction running from 1940 into the 90s with the site being restored to form a nature reserve.
See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/southeast/si ... slip.shtml
From what I can glean, the current site is actually Margam OCCS (itself an extension of Parc Slip West), which Celtic Energy want to extend:

Re: Opencast site near Bridgend
The site you see is the mothballed margam opencast. It was the continuation of parc slip. It is awaiting a planning aplication for an extansion, so all the kit has been moved from it. A good site to visit would be either nant helen by onllwyn or east pit east by GCG.
