A+B Plant Hire an Aveling-Barford Company

Post #1 by XS650 » Tue Mar 13, 2012 12:20 pm

Were Aveling-Barford the only contruction machinery manufacturer to run their own plant hire company ( A+B hire) ? Photos of their hire kit crop up quite often on net from 15cwt dumpers to 35 ton dump trucks and loaders.

Short answes No

Aveling Barford predecessor Aveling & Porter ran a hire operation for the steam rollers, In that machines were sold on HP terms to customers and had a small brass plate affixed to them saying the belonged to the Hire co till they were fully paid for (to stop them being 'reposed' by other when firm went pop or sold off). Other manufactures operated similar arrangements. Like today several of the large car makers have owned / had a large shares in some of the well known car hire/leasing companies IIRC Ford being one and GM another.

In recent times Caterpillar owned Hewden Stuart Plant hire. (think they have now sold part of it if not all)
Edit: Finning UK the Cat dealer owned them (see post by IBH below with update)

Sure there were other firms but off the top canot recall who it was.

Edit fix mistake

Hi All

Short answer is YES.

On a smaller scale in the 1950s Motorail dumpers had their own hire fleet too.

Interesting Dave and Fred .Think leasing is a bit different , but Caterpillar owning Hewden plant a definite case :) funnily enough our yard next to a big Hewden depot and they don't have much Cat stuff !

CAT didn't own Hewden Stuart, but their UK dealer Finning did.
Finning sold Hewden Stuart to a venture capital company, but do maintain their own rental fleet of CAT equipment in the UK, though don't like to advertise that they do.

They aren't that shy - there was an article in the trade press recently about the Finning hire fleet. Think it was in Earthmovers.

Most of the traction engine makers did Hire Purchase in some form or other. Burrell had a section which specialised in it.

Most of the big Showmans engines were on HP deals.
