I heard a story about one of the 769's the other day by one of our fitters . He was on a job where the dumpers were running on a fairly steep incline, while he was working on a machine on the side of the haul road he noticed that one of the trucks was traveling faster than normal down the ramp and he wondered why the operator had not used the retarder but all to soon it became apparent that the operator was holding something out of the cab window, it was in fact the steering wheel which had come off the collum and in some way had affected the retarder lever so he had no way to slow down, he was lucky that the haul road was long and flat so he eventually slowed down to a stop .

Fixed bodies made by Bowmaker. Working on building a new breakwater at Port Talbot. The rocks were coming from a quarry some way inland via a "private" haul road that crossed public roads, hence the registrations.

Shephard,Hill & company,had 2 Lima 2400 rigged up as grabs working there @ Port Talbot.I remember one of the Bowmaker fitters telling me about this contract when I worked there with him,for Finning.He said that they were having terrible trouble with the Cat 769s (early 99v small wheel versions) with the tires getting very hot because of the speed that they were travelling @.
