Found this, pretty impressive
Caterpillar D9 supports Paver. Cat D8 supports Roller. Hamm DV-8 Double Steel Drum Roller compacts asphalt. ABG 525 fixed screen paver places asphalt. Triaxle Dump Truck hauls asphalt. Roadtec 1000 shuttle buggy transfers asphalt from truck to crane. Link Belt 60 ton hydraulic crane supports conveyor that feeds asphalt to paver.

That is really impressive - really well thought out.

I'm surprised that the paver can spread the material on the 30 degree slope. I guess the auger must run up hill.

Very similar to how Toyota's test track at Burnaston, Derby, was surfaced. The paver however was a one off in that the machine and operator sat level and the chassis was at a steep angle, we supplied wet mix from Tilcons Ballidon quarry and (I think, it was a long time ago!) an elevator transferred it to the paver. The roller, which was again offset, was supported by a dozer with a side winch. RMC from Washwood Heath supplied the blacktop. That was a steep slope, I believe that 60mph was the minimum speed to get around the banking! I guess that the paver had limited use, though of course it would need resurfacing by now as it must be about 15 years ago. I cant even remember the contractor, it could have been Colas?

I would think some of these machines would be one offs Pete and the cost swallowed in the cost of the jobs.
I resurfaced various race tracks, test tracks and runways during my time on the blacktop, the most interesting was the Millbrook proving ground, I saw some strange/interesting vehicles being tested there from lorry,s to MOD tanks, unfortunately the security was pretty strict and one of the main rules was no cameras allowed
I dont even know if Millbrook still exists?

I think that you are right about the machines Richard, we used to do work at MIRA but they just used a pair of standard machines fastened together if I remember correctly. I know that I had to take a laden eight wheeler round the banking at MIRA and I was following the roller, made the old ar*e cheeks clench a little as I couldnt get any speed up! Millbrook is still used, I was talking to a Cummins engineer last week in Durham and he had just been there for a few days testing trucks. We also did work at Gaydon (where they were testing Jaguars and they were encased all in wood so that you couldn't tell what they were) and the Lucas/Girling test track at Hedge End, or was it Fen End, near Balsall Common.

Its funny what you see all in a days work, but think nothing of it at the time.
I have seen the same Pete, vehicles covered in strange items while being tested and twitchy people looking out for cameras etc.
I think the Lucas/Girling test area is at Fen end near Balsall Common.

Amazing job! Machines never fail to impress me. I just hope everyone involved in the project are covered with insurances. That is one dangerous job!
