Road Heater/Planers

Post #1 by Ian Fletcher1970 » Fri Jan 15, 2010 11:26 pm

Does anyone have any pictures of the Heater/planers from the 60's/70's that were used before the advances in cold planer technology?

I can vaguely recall watching a machine that I think was a Jobling machine way back in the mid seventies, it heated the old road surface before ripping it up. Sadly no pics though

Hi Ian,
I made a similar post under Heavy Haulage on Jan19th 2009 and got a couple of interesting replies but unfortunately no pictures - pity because they were quite a sight when in action!

Can remember what seemed like a monster machine coming through the village in the mid to late 50's. It was towed by an old Scammell - I remember the "coffee pot" radiator so it was possibly a Pioneer or Explorer and was operated by a company with a name like East Anglian Roadstone Company - I believe that they were taken over by Glossops.

One was working right outside my school window when I was about seven , the torture of being forced to look at the blackboard and not the great fire breathing old Scammell outside :D
This seemed like a monster to me but even then I knew exactly what make it was !
I have found a pic of them which i will post.

Could have been the one I saw in 1960s, looks ancient to us but suppose in mid sixties they were only 20ish years old and their's still plenty of H & J reg 20 year old wagons on our roads now. However the road sign looks 1970s so they may have lasted longer. But what else is designed to travel at walking pace :D
