Noel, you're allways welcome mate.I wasn't sure about the black cab but it's growing on me now.
Morgan's moved the D8 again this week and I followed the lot to the new jobsite. The Police didn't bother with us and there were no problems with the journey. The D8 went straight to work soil stripping the tip areas which were big hollows in the field and I presumed the wettest areas. The soil was actually pretty dry and apart from a bit of soft muck at the bottom the area seemed to be hard clay and marle stone  .The cut area was nice and dry and the D8 soon starting knocking a hole in the job.I was going to do most of the job myself as I assumed the yard would be quiet in January(and the ressesion)but it's pretty busy so apart from a couple of hours of me getting the job going on the first day and taking these pics,I haven't been on site,so I am just getting feed back from the driver and the customer as to the progress of the job.So far,so good they tell me

Nick,It's not the noise from the engine that's the problem. It's the torque qnd tranny that blows your ears.D6C's and D6D's are worse.
Paul,They had nothing better to do!

I Allways have had a soft spot for D8H's. They are mostly retired here in California, nice to see such a straight machine, hope you get many more years of service.

Nick,

I don't see any of the typical black smoke associated with D8H's. How do you get it to run so clean? Does it still have any power?

Dug

Hi Dug, the entire tractor has been completely rebuilt from the ground up so it's in good shape. When it poweres up during use of the deaccellerator it does give out a small plume of black smoke which imediately clears when at constant revs.It doesn't(and shouldn't) belch out thick black smoke like a D9 or 657.You can adjust the air to fuel ratio in all pumps to suit your needs. To much black smoke can burn valves or cook piston eventually even though it looks good!.

Here's a couple of smoke pics. The first is of the D8H 68A 5842 with the rops cab taken last year before I fitted the cab.The second is of another D8H 68A 5768 taken in the early 90's.

Hi Nick, thanks for the answer, all the U.S. D8H's i have seen always smoked, especially when changing directions. You give the serial number prefix as 68A where are they built? I have only seen U.S. built 36A & 46A D8H's (up to 33000 serial numbers)
