Hi all, just brought this Fowler Challenger 3

Does anyone know how to get rear drums spinning? Also does anyone know what are they used for on this bulldozer?

Cheers Joe

Hi there Joe; my guess would be that these are winch drums used for towed scraper box operations 'Fowler man' Fred Evans is the best man to ask about these machines.

Gudday Joe, Jeremy would be correct I think in the use for those drums
All power control units on the rear of a crawler tractor that I have seen will only spin when the clutch is engaged

Not knowing of what part of this wide brown land your from but I do know there is a bloke near Toowoomba that knows a fare about these

Hi,
Yes Jeremy is right. That is what's left of a cable control winch.
Fowlers fitted Blaw Knox type F winches to the 3s. These had the drums lined fore and aft rather than across the width of the machine like yours, though they did fit the Blaw Knox type K to the Challenger 4s with the same drum arrangement as yours.
The drums fitted to your machine look to me like the remains of a Letourneau winch which may have been adapted to fit, there were plenty of them about post war.
Paul is right to say they should spin when the clutch is engaged as the drive is normally taken straight from the back of the gearbox main shaft.
The guy in Towumba is Don Scouller He is on here some times as "Marshall MP6" If you wanted to contact him you may be able to PM him through this forum.

Awesome stuff, looks in good condition. Interesting cab too. Seems to run great.
Has the same blade set up as ours.

Is that another fuel tank behind the seat someone has added? They were originally under the gearbox.
I think the challenger 33 had rear fuel tank.
