CATERPILLAR D9 19A

Post #1 by plantman » Sun Jun 15, 2008 2:22 pm

Just a few photos of a D9 19A at work taken in the late 80s, the seals went in the torque converter and it was parked up. Bit by bit it was stripped and then scraped, pity, as would have been nise to seen restored. Biggest problem was if sitting on tick over and low on fuel they would draw the fuel out of the torque and then would not drive.

Hi Noel! good to see you are about!
I had a good session with the 19A.s and 491's for Mick Bent-marshall, when we had to pull in for the night, we had to stop the engines "at the right spot" or they would loose the whole tank of diesel overnight from the torque converter seals. new seals wouldnt stem the flow as the shafts were worn too bad.
that aside, they were good tractors that had to work very hard pulling those big old 491 scrapers, especialy if the tip was up hill. The dry back end also called for sympathetic treatment of the brakes or the linings would soon fry.
I have some fond memories of those little old 9's
Heres an 18a that will still do a turn
