EX J.M.J.s Cat D8 22A

Post #1 by plantman » Sun Apr 12, 2009 6:49 pm

Went with Neil Dillon on Saturday to look at a D8 22A, thats been sitting in a barn. It is an old J.M.J. Contracts machine that is now belongs now to the driver Frank Rice, who drove it when Neil first seen it 35yrs ago.
The donky engine is working O.K. and the main engine was running on Friday. Hope you enjoy the photos.

Noel, thanks for the photos-Frank Rice was actually one of the earthmoving foremen with jmj and went into partnership with another foreman Terry McKeever after jmj closed, I dont know he would have driven this machine for jmj. I only saw frank on the playing fields job a few times when he was checking on progress but the 22A I remember being on that job driven by someone else. Any input here from Mervyn? his dad worked on this site for jmj.

Asked the question but hes not sure as it was a while ago but he thinks possibly Tommy Jordan if that rings a bell but thinks that there wasnt 1 driver for the duration and that Frank Rice may have had a day or two.Great find this, with interesting history.

Hi Noel and Neil
thanks for the story and photos so far.
does mr Rice know anything about this machine prior to it's time with jmj?A few photos from that time would be a real bonus.

Brian,
I will be calling again and will ask the question but Frank Rice is not too well, all I can tell you is that the machne to my knowledge has not been resprayed since 1973 so you are seeing it in its original colours. However Franks sons are talking about restoring the old girl after they finish restoring a Massey Ferguson 135 multipower!

I do not know what they traded under but I've been told they ran a fleet of Volvo dumpers and excavators, jcb....
