I see the 977 has a side-dump bucket.

First pipeline I had any contact with was the Finart - Grangemouth oil line with CJB/Stevenage Plant Services (SPS) in 1967 when it came through the farm.

They had eight huge Cat sidebooms and D8s deeply bogged in a line. Ran out of anything capable of trying to get them out and ended up with bringing in stuff from miles down the line by road on the old knock-out axle lowloaders. These were amazing times for a 13 year old!!

Dave,i bet that was a sight, and no camera  the 977 was kept busy, between stripping topsoil and tugging out kit that was stuck

I am surprised that they didn't strip the topsoil off the spread so it it could be reinstated easier or did they leave grass on hoping it would stop machines sinking, On the pipeline I worked on the spread was striped and when finished looked good, Don't know if farmers tractor wheels dropped into 36" trench the following year .

RJ Corman is based up the road from me about 45 minutes. They have some neat stuff to work with. I almost took a job with them a few years ago but got another position at another company.
