Hello Martyn
Where are the anti-burst valves on that machine? Or is the jet light enough for the machine to be exempt?

You know Fred, i have no idea about the check valves as i cant see the footage that clearly ... but i wonder if the machine was on the airport working some where, or they brought it in for that one job ?

I think this machine may very well of already been at work at the airport as I had heard from John that work was being done there by Colemans.
Mind that must be a big contract as that was at least a year or so ago now
I'm pretty sure that the machine is fitted with check valves too, I thought that was a legal safety requirement?

Depends how old the machine is doesnt it as to wether it will have check valves? that looks to be a 330B so its pretty old now considering we are on the D series now! I know for a fact that my old 315CL didnt have a check on the dipper ram just on the two lift rams!

Check valves have long been and extra. If you carryout lifting operations over 1 tonnes you should have them fitted (tho' not many people do). You can lift upto 1 tonne with anything, be it a mini or a 65 tonner without check valves, but just because the machine CAN lift more than a tonne safely it does n't mean it's safe working load according to LOLER is what it can lift. Thats why you often see 13 to 20 tonne machines on site with SWL 1 tonne written on the booms even though we know it can comfortably lift more.

Check valves should be fitted if the machine is working in an invironment where a hose failure can is likely to cause the working equipment to fall and damage persons or property. Thats why cranes all have them fitted as well as high reach demo's and some ground workers choose to have them just in case.

Sorry to be an anorak but the machines just had their anual LOLER test last Friday!

Thanks for that clive  I didn't know where the law stood so far as LOLER and excavators were concerned, I am aware of how it applies to where I work as I have to arrange inspection of the overhead cranes and all of the lifting gear from slings to eye bolts. All OTT even when you have a fully trained operator if they don't take the care they should.

Hi Jeremy  , the LOLER bit is not a legal requirement for excavators but in this age of arse covering I think it pays to have your machines independently inspected just in case. After all they are really a lifting appliance although they are tecnically excavators not cranes. Some of the larger contractors I work for ask for the LOLER certificate and some even ask for a copy of the MAINTENANCE RECORDS! Do they think we're proffesional or wot!!!!!!! As ever I ablige (reluctantly) because you just have to! :x
