Hi all,
I'm in the middle of replacing steering clutch discs on my Mitsubishi BS3F Drott.
I have a service manual, but in typical Jap fashion ,it has no clutch pack specs. :x
I will retain the OEM fibre plates, which are in good shape & are sintered & of excellent quality. The metals have been replaced with good aftermarket discs.
How can I work out the proper height of my clutch pack? I need to get the best life that I can from this clutch repair.

Also, over the years,I have heard of blokes putting in an extra metal disc ,to add to stack thickness.
What are the pros & cons of this practise.....& should the extra disc be placed in a particular place in the stack (ie.. middle or end).??

Thanks lads , ;)

Hello Jim
What I do, take a measurement before stripdown. You could then add a few thou to take into wear and tear.Basically a guesstimate if you have no info.Measure old disc thicknes,to new disc thickness.
To add another disc may cause a problem.Sticking etc.It would be a pain to to strip it again if you found it sticking.
If you got good replacements,I would just rebuild them.
Cheers
Martyn

Hi Martyn,
Thanks for your thoughts.
The machine wouldn't steer either way & I found that the bevel seals were leaking, plus the thrust bearings were over greased,so I had oil & grease everywhere.
The original plates looked OK,but a few metals were warped ,so I replaced all metals,brake-cleaned the fibres & renewed seals.

I was going to just clean everything up & put them back, but wondered if I should thicken it all up a bit.
I suppose too much can be as bad as too little.

How is your weather going...any improvement so you can get back to the projects?

Hi Martyn,
Glad you are coming into better weather.
Our Summer was mild & now we are moving toward Winter....I hate Winter,as it slows progress a bit.We don't siffer too much really....our worst is the odd morning @ -2 with frost.

I found a guy in Texas who had the specs I needed for my clutches.
I'll fit them over the weekend.

Jim

Thats great news.I think we could do with more tech details as a ref on this site so that members could get their info much quicker .
Good luck with it Jim,keep us posted.Back on nights tonight, minus 5 when I left work this morning.Time for something to eat now and back to work. Pays the bills anyway.

Martyn,
I actually had a week away from my steering clutch job,so if I had known required info wasn't in the manual,I would have started searching earlier.Took me another week to find it.

I agree that we need to be able to find specs & info a lot quicker.
I have a lot of trouble getting undercarriage info ....it's like a closed society.
I'm sure others have problems getting engine specs & the like.

Jim
