No there will be wear in the rockers ,it's best to reset them
you can get a bar in the drive shaft to the hyd pump and turn the engine over with it
use the rule of 9 to set the rockers they should be 13 thou cold both in let and exhaust

If the oil level and dump spool are ok it's going to be inside the box , I take it that it's the Borge warner forward and reverser type and not the later electric box , if it is the Borge warner shuttle £1,000 is a bit high for one, the parts are normally about £300 and the strip and rebuild is only...

It sounds like the forward clutch pack is failing this can be if the oil is low or the dump valve is out of adjustment or if the clutch pack is burnt out , the reverse pack never seems to give problems

A few years ago I had a customer with a 3C11 with a misfire on striping the top of the engine the oil feed to the rocker shaft had blocked to one way and the valve springs had rusted and not returning the valves causing a misfire through loss of compression .

if you have two cylinders next to each other not working the head gasket could be blown between them and not affecting the cooling system.
