Just a silly thought, I'm sure the old 990 I used to use had a dump valve lever somewhere beside or behind the quadrant. Could it be as simple as the dump valve partially open?

I've seen it done with with a Honda on an MG6 using the original clutch. Rather nausiating in some respects as it was so quiet, and so easy to start!

Check which oil is recommended as I'm sure I remember not being able to use UFO in the back of some IHC tractors but I can't think which ones.
