If you get the head tested it would also be worth checking that it does not need a skim.

The spring retainer kind of clips on with the lugs. It must have broken up and gone down in the bottom. The other thing that does not help is when the pivot ball wears it can make the gear lever very sloppy. I had one that I built up with weld and ground off by hand that made quite an improvement. F...

I would check the rad core is clean. I had trouble years ago with a rad that looked clean but when I took it off it was choked with fine dust. With the oil cooler in place difficult to clean.

Thinking perhaps the above cannot be the cause as you can swing with the decompressor.

Maybe stupid question but are you putting the fuel rack in to the start position.
Could the exhaust valve be stuck?

Something I found reading recently Jeremy was that Leyland motors had a big stake in Atkinson which was was not shed until one of the Atkinson mergers. Apparently Leyland had no input into day to day running of Atkinson.

There are usually bits on ebay? I think you are right that the same top was used up to and including the power major. All pre draught control.
