Looks Benford to me. Engines might vary over time. Certainly Thwaites changed engines over the years and sometimes offered options.

Must missed the Merton loader Jeremy. What an odd arrangement withe the driver sitting over the engine. Looks like they pinched some of the design cues from Weatherill.

If you look for the casting codes on the Fordson skid and the engine no if original you might confirm the date. (the skid would likely only be a few weeks older than the machine)

Re: 1987 JCB 3CX 1550B Losing reverse from time to time

The following might help

http://www.whatoildoineed.com/

It looks like the Morris Liquimatic DII - Part No. LDT is the oil to use which is an ATF but do not to use ATF -D2 or -D3

Second choice is Ring Free XHD 10W - Part No. RXT

Looking on the Q8 oil site gives conflicting information.

Re: 1987 JCB 3CX 1550B Losing reverse from time to time

The older borg Warner should have the SAE 10w which could double as a light engine oil.
Not sure about the later shuttle but many machines use the atf type oil which dextron falls into.
