Hi mate thanks for the updated info.Yes the old owner replaced the starter a few years back. I dont have the tractor with me at the moment (its about 3hrs away at a bush block) so cant do your test anytime soon unfortunately. Hi essexpete the gen gets hot only when connected via the field and D wires back to the regulator. If I run the tractor without the wires connected it does not get hot at all.

Definitely needs replacing as the effort to get one bolt undone was enough to know I should have ordered a rod as well. Wish I had read your post 6 ...
