Re: The way we were

Hiya Fred,
That looks like Terry Rowe on the 'Bomb Navvie' His father had a level near South tunnel years ago. He is still in Nelson and i'll have to ring him to see if he has any information on the 61-RB.

Re: The way we were

Hiya Fred. I was talking recently to someone from Deri and he insisted that Ryan had a 71-RB in Fochriw but i know it was indeed a 61-RB as the driver was Glyn Seaton AKA 'The Duke' from Pontypridd, It worked directly opposite the Disposal site at Fochriw ,Ryan had some coal from there but not as mu...

Re: The way we were

Hi Graham, Good to see you posting here again and to see you at Barry's on the 10 RB a couple of weeks back. A very interesting post. There were only two Marions that I knew of in South Wales. There was a 33M at Penderyn Quarries, that was a 3/4 yard machine with full air control, (pics below). htt...

Re: The way we were

The trucks in the next to last photos are in fact Belaz'. Model 540s to be exact. Now I've got a question; what kind of shovels are shown in the last photo? I've seen other photos of machines with this style gantry, but have never seen a name. Could they be Babcock or Blaw-Knox? If anybody knows fo...

Re: The way we were

I would say the navvie is a 38-RB Fred, A 54 had a different A frame arrangement, There is a jury mast on that Navvie coupled by 8 part reeving onto the sunken A frame which is not visible on a 38-RB.

Re: Nant Llesg surface mine rejected

The proposed Nant Llesg at present is a bit of an eysore to say the least, Ryans were in there back in the 70s doing a bit of muck splashing with a 61-RB Dragline but did'nt get rich from it, What is so short sighted with situations like this is once Ffos y Fran is finished the plant could be releas...
