Re: Gopher Boss or 5 Star Owners?

I have now pretty well finished the restoration, before & after pics below. Everything painted black I have fabricated/machined myself. The breakthrough came with me contacting a fellow owner in Southern France. This gave me the pin centres I needed. Machine now dry & all functions operate. ...

Re: Anyone identify this Dozer of mine.

I never saw one with a 'treedozer' before, looks a good idea. Great pity IH was let die, some of thier tech did live on in Dressta until recently, but these have gone Hystat after a firm called Lui Gong took over. I see they now have a uk dealer though, which they never did before

Re: Anything Whitlock ( Diggers, dump trucks, cranes et al )

Hi I have driven a couple of Whitlocks in my time, & know to a preserved one (been in same family since 1968). This is a B reg Whitlock Super Major. Interestingly it has a ram & chain slew system, I see the green cabbed Cheek machine, same year, same model still has a cable slew system - thi...

Re: JCB's and the law on the road

Had a look at a handbook for the 2CX - the sheer complexity of the axles & the amount of daily greasing needed in that area (compared to my old 3C I owned for years) has made me think twice for now, leaving aside the problems with the steering regularly going 'out of synch' has made me realise t...

Re: JCB's and the law on the road

If as above I only wanted to insure for the road travel risk (only ever to be driven by me) would it matter if I took on the occasional paid job (not on the highway) to sort of cover costs - I am looking at owning a 2CX vs a micro digger. Go any bigger on the towed machine & costs of the tow veh...

Gopher Boss or 5 Star Owners?

By any chance does anyone on here own a Gopher Boss or 5 Star 180 Degree small towable machine. I have one to restore but need measurements of the missing slew kingpost - It is the model that uses 60mm bore rams. It is at the base of this page http://www.oilyhands.co.uk/gopher_towable_diggers.htm Th...

Re: Artic Steer Backhoe Loaders

Thanks both for interest. I knew of Hydremera's but not that the Army had them, must have been post the time when MOD supply contracts had to be opened up to whole of EU. Above pic looks like it could be a fair front end loader/dozer. Is the 4CX concept somewhat based on this? There must be some adv...

Re: Anyone identify this Dozer of mine.

Hi Greg, The standard blade lever was thus, first movement toward the front windscreen is blade lower under power, further movement in the same direction is float, (i.e. the blade follows the ground contours under it's own weight - ideal for smoothing out in the reverse travel, I think there was a '...

Artic Steer Backhoe Loaders

Are there any real advantages in Artic Steer or AWS machines over the usual tractor based machines like the 3CX or Case 580. The Army had Muir Hills & Allis Chalmers - much more like an artic front end loader with an added backhoe. The Italians seem to like these AWS / Artic steer machines - see...

Re: 3CX syncro shuttle gearbox oil

I did an operating course on the 3CX in '88 & remember being told that the early ones had ATF in the torque box & later ones had gone to SAE 30 in this box, so to check with the owner which fluid he had in his. There was a filler / dipstick under the bonnet on the left just in front of the c...
