A friend has purchased a very tidy International 3400 Backhoe with very low hours to restore. Its a very interesting machine and quite rare too. Does anyone have any information or know the whereabouts of any others?

Also looking for an Operators and Parts/Service Manual if anyone has one?

thanks

Hello Julian,I may be able to help Barry,I saw that machine last week, looks in good condition. I think there is one in mid Devon.I had a load of Maintenance manuals for most machines including this type.Need to find the boxes as they were packed in 1988 and never opened.
Regards
Martyn

Just received pictures of the International which has been fully restored. Must be the quickest restoration to take place and the results are very good

Looks well Julian and not a machine you saw very often even in their working days.

I saw what looked like a Loader only version the other week in the long grass at Andrew Beaulas ? working day near Hull.

Thanks for the photos. Steelfab but that machine has a design fault. The boom ram is underneath the boom and you would never get the power that you would with most other machines that have them on top because the oil is going to the wrong side of the ram. And it doesn't look as if you could change them round. Sure, you would have tremendous lift on the boom but it would be interesting to see if you could lift and slew yourself out of trouble.

And where are the steps to climb aboard ? I presume it is a rack and pinion slew. But it was neat and tidy and all up together. I like the way the hoses are out of the way of the kingpost, maybe that hose to the slew cylinder could be tidied up a bit. But a good restoration. Well done to whoever did it. A bit more history conserved.

Hello Julian
Mike Harding took some good photos of it in Pontypridd Park as we waited for the lowloader. My daughter drove the B100 around the park,I drove the D4 dozer. It turned a few heads
We left our mark on that event.
They had record crowds this year as well.

Would I be correct in thinking that the IH TLBH could be speced with the IH hydro transmission?

Scooby, if you look closely you will see a hinged door on the offside of the machine ... dont forget its a American designed machine, and i believe it was quite popular over there back in the 70's .. i seem to recall a few machines with the lift ram underneath the boom .. perhaps others know of such machines ?

Yes Martyn, I saw the hinged door but I bet that is for access to a filter or something. The access is via a sliding door on both sides but what I wanted to know was how do you get into the doorway. There some steps in the front of the cabin, under the lights, but when you've climbed those it looks a bit of a shuffle to get into the cab.

As regards the boom ram position David Brown made a very good farm digger that was tractor mounted and you could change the position of the ram to be either on top or underneath. The underneath option was for when you had a grab loader fitted and were loading sugar beet etc. But if you went digging with the ram underneath you didn't have anything like the power that you would if you changed the ram to be on top of the boom. This was important to me because as a farm contractor a lot of my work was cleaning out ditches and that means that you are constantly battling with tree roots etc. and you want to be able to exert maximum pressure on the boom.

The two boom ram options can clearly be seen here :

The top section slides back and the bottom half opens out on the right hand side of the machine. This machine has done very little work in its life and no backhoe work at all.
It developed a minor leak on a small hydraulic pipe which was fixed before it was loaded for its trip home.
